The Impossibility of Escape

Oh London You!
Great Big Dirty Beast!
You!
Cruelly stole my heart
Bit it in two and
I drowned in your splendour
Although this abusive union
Could hardly be described as tender
This nowhere land
So undefined
So concrete & bland
Yet I am still so entwined
In your rude brickwork
Towers jutting into skyline
Piercing holes into the heavy
Grey clouds we worship
Thundering down the levy
We exchanged for love
On our heads
No bracken hills here nor
Chants to raise the dead
Nor wild, native cats
To call me here
Or bring us back
Only a muddy old
River crawling with rats
Framed in Imperial
Brutalist Edifice
Frozen on the bridge
Waiting for the kiss
The life giving
Petrol choke
Swooping down from
That cold stylish lover
Those rare, deep eyes -
Bottomless urban pools –
Yet I long for no other.
